"The Standing Accretion Shock Instability and Supernova Mechanisms"

Shoichi Yamada (Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan)

Abstract:

The mechanism of core-collapse supernovae has eluded our understanding for more than 40 years. The current research pendulum swings again to multi-dimensional aspects of the phenomenon. In this talk, I will discuss the hydrodynamical instability referred to as the Standing Accretion Shock Instability, or SASI, in particular its 3D features based on our own numerical simulations. The implications for the explosion mechanism this instability may have will be addressed. In so doing, I will also talk about our recent study on the matter heating via the dissipation of Alfven waves.
